The drive itself contains other applications, as well as the Disk Warrior utility (in the Installer Items folder): DiskWarrior 5 Installer and (in a separate folder) DiskWarrior Recovery Maker. As a Mac cannot be started with a version of OS X released before the Mac was made, the older version (which can be used on those machines with 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6) needs to be updated. There are three basic situations: installation of Disk Warrior onto the hard disk of the Mac (or external disk running OS X) making a rescue disk using a flash drive or other external media and preparing the DiskWarrior flash drive for newer Macs. In addition, the software as supplied cannot run on the latest Macs, so some updating needs to be done. The software can be installed on the Mac, but cannot check the disk it is run from, so there are options for installing on other media. The latest version of DiskWarrior (5) is supplied on a USB flash drive: a sensible change as these days new Macs do not come with optical drives. Like a well-serviced car, users may never experience problems but some forget that oil needs to be changed and systems need to be checked: preventative maintenance. However, there are ways in which this reliability can be upset: power interruptions, data corruption and several other reasons.
